NRSInsights reports a 5.8% YoY increase in same-store sales for July 2025, with the NRS retail network comprising approximately 37,200 active terminals nationwide, scanning purchases at 32,100 independent retailers. Same-store sales increased 3.5% YoY in the previous month and 4.2% compared to the corresponding three months a year ago.

NRSInsights, a provider of sales data and analytics drawn from retail transactions processed through the National Retail Solutions (NRS) point-of-sale (POS) platform, has announced robust same-store sales results for July 2025. The NRS retail network, comprising approximately 37,200 active terminals nationwide, saw an impressive 5.8% year-over-year (YoY) increase in same-store sales. This performance marks the highest rate of increase in over a year, according to NRS.

In the previous month of June 2025, same-store sales increased by 3.5% YoY, while for the three months ended July 31, 2025, the network reported a 4.2% increase compared to the corresponding period a year ago. These figures underscore the resilience and growth potential of the independent retail sector, particularly within urban markets.

The increase in sales was driven by several factors, including a 3.2% YoY increase in units sold and a 1.5% YoY increase in the number of baskets (transactions) per store. The dollar-weighted average price for the top 500 items purchased increased by 2.9% YoY, a higher rate than the 2.7% recorded in June 2025.

Commenting on the performance, Brandon Thurber, VP of Data Sales & Client Success at NRS, noted that beverage performance played a significant role in driving the expansion. Energy drinks, soft drinks, and both sparkling and seltzer waters delivered strong gains. Sports drinks remained stable year-over-year but saw a month-over-month increase. Additionally, prepared cocktails, modern oral nicotine, and performance and nutrition shakes experienced continued growth, while certain snack categories faced pressure.

These findings align with broader retail trade trends. Over the past twelve months, the U.S. Commerce Department’s Advance Monthly Retail Trade data, excluding food services, outpaced the NRS network’s three-month moving average same-store sales by an average of 0.2%. In June, the NRS network’s three-month rolling average increase exceeded the US Commerce Department’s by 0.9%.

The NRSInsights monthly Same-Store Retail Sales Reports provide timely topline data reflective of sales at the NRS network of independent, predominantly urban, retail stores. The data is derived from millions of transactions processed through the network’s POS terminals, offering valuable insights into consumer behavior and market trends.
