IBM has launched its new Power11 chips and servers, emphasizing energy efficiency, security, and AI integration. The systems aim for 99.9999% uptime with minimal downtime and feature IBM Power Cyber Vault for ransomware detection. The Spyre AI chip, optimized for inference, is expected in Q4 2025. Performance upgrades include up to 55% better core performance than Power9 and 45% more capacity in entry and mid-range systems over Power10.
IBM has announced the launch of its new Power11 chips and servers, which are designed to meet the growing demands of enterprise computing in the age of AI. The new servers emphasize energy efficiency, robust security features, and advanced AI integration to support mission-critical workloads.
Power11 boasts a 99.9999% uptime, significantly reducing planned and unplanned downtime. This is achieved through features such as zero planned downtime for system maintenance and less than one-minute guaranteed ransomware threat detection with IBM Power Cyber Vault [1]. The Cyber Vault solution offers protection against cyberattacks by automatically capturing and storing immutable snapshots of data, following the NIST cybersecurity framework.
The Power11 servers also incorporate built-in quantum-safe cryptography and firmware integrity attacks, further enhancing security. Additionally, they are designed to be the most resilient servers in IBM's history, addressing both planned and cyber-incident-related downtime.
Performance-wise, Power11 offers up to 55% better core performance compared to Power9 and up to 45% more capacity in entry and mid-range systems over Power10. This is achieved through advanced AI acceleration with the IBM Spyre Accelerator, which is expected to be available in Q4 2025 [2]. The Spyre Accelerator is designed to handle AI-intensive inference workloads, providing significant performance gains.
The new servers also support IBM Power Virtual Server in IBM Cloud, offering a fast path to the cloud for Power workloads. This is particularly beneficial for organizations looking to modernize their application development processes. IBM watsonx Code Assistant for i will help developers extend critical RPG applications, and watsonx.data, IBM's hybrid, open data lakehouse, will be available on Power11 by the end of 2025.
In terms of energy efficiency, Power11 offers twice the performance per watt versus comparable x86 servers and up to 28% better server efficiency with the new Energy Efficient Mode compared to Maximum Performance Mode [3].
The launch of Power11 coincides with the increasing need for AI-ready infrastructure and hybrid cloud capabilities. As more organizations transition into the AI era, IBM's Power11 servers aim to provide the necessary tools to maintain competitiveness and operational efficiency.
IBM Power11 will be generally available on July 25, 2025, and the IBM Spyre Accelerator is expected to be available in Q4 2025. To learn more about Power11, visit the official IBM website.
