IBM has announced its ambitious plan to build the world's first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer, named IBM Quantum Starling. The Starling is expected to perform 20,000 times more operations than current quantum computers, representing a significant leap in computational power.

IBM Quantum Kookaburra, slated for 2026, will be the first modular processor designed to store and process encoded information. IBM Quantum Cockatoo, expected in 2027, will entangle two Kookaburra modules, linking quantum chips together like nodes in a larger system.

These advancements are part of IBM's broader vision to create a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of running complex algorithms with realistic physical resources. The company's breakthrough research in error-correcting codes, particularly the use of qLDPC codes, has significantly reduced the number of physical qubits needed for error correction, making the architecture more efficient and scalable.
