IBM and AMD have partnered to develop new computing architectures combining quantum computers, AI, and high-performance computing, dubbed "quantum-centric supercomputing." The joint venture will leverage IBM's expertise in quantum computing and AMD's expertise in AI accelerators and high-performance computing to build scalable, open-source platforms. The goal is to develop fault-tolerant quantum computers by the end of the decade using AMD technologies for real-time error correction.

IBM (IBM) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have formed a strategic partnership to develop "quantum-centric supercomputing," a new computing architecture that combines quantum computers, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance computing (HPC). The joint venture aims to build scalable, open-source platforms that can solve complex problems beyond the reach of traditional computing.

The collaboration leverages IBM's expertise in quantum computing and AMD's strengths in AI accelerators and high-performance computing. The goal is to develop fault-tolerant quantum computers by the end of the decade, with AMD technologies potentially enabling real-time error correction. The initiative seeks to integrate AMD's CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs with IBM's quantum systems to accelerate emerging classes of algorithms.

The partnership was announced on Tuesday, with IBM shares rising 0.8% and AMD shares gaining 2% in premarket trading. The alliance follows IBM's June announcement of a "viable path" to building the world's first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer by the end of the decade. IBM's Starling quantum computer is expected to perform 20,000 times the operations of current quantum computers [1].

The collaboration is part of a broader trend of increased investment in quantum computing. According to McKinsey, the quantum technology market, spanning computing, communications, and sensing, is projected to grow from $4 billion in 2024 to as much as $97 billion by 2035, with quantum computing alone potentially accounting for $72 billion. Governments worldwide have already pledged more than $10 billion in funding for 2025, underscoring the strategic importance of the field [3].

IBM and AMD plan to demonstrate hybrid quantum-classical workflows later this year, showcasing how IBM's quantum computers can work alongside AMD hardware. This collaboration is expected to drive advancements in drug discovery, climate modeling, and other complex applications.
