In the ever-evolving landscape of the labor movement, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) stands out as a beacon of hope and progress. The IAM's recent growth and achievements, highlighted by its president, Brian Bryant, at the annual National Labor and Management Conference, underscore the union's commitment to advocating for workers' rights and fostering a more inclusive and diverse labor movement.

The IAM's expansion into non-traditional union trades, such as healthcare and emerging technologies, has been a significant driver of its growth. This strategic shift has allowed the union to tap into new membership bases and solidify its position as one of the largest and most influential unions in North America. The IAM's partnership with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has been particularly instrumental in this regard, leading to successful organizing campaigns like the one at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, which brought over 1,000 healthcare workers into the IAM's ranks.

In addition to its growth in non-traditional sectors, the IAM has also made significant strides in supporting and advocating for military veterans within its membership. The union's recognition as a Veterans Services Organization by the Veterans Administration (VA) has enabled it to provide professional case representation for its military veterans at no charge, ensuring that they receive the benefits and services they deserve. This recognition not only enhances the IAM's ability to support its veteran members but also demonstrates its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive labor movement.

Bryant's keynote address also touched on the IAM's successful seven-week strike at boeing, which resulted in a 40% wage increase over the next four years for its members. This victory serves as a testament to the IAM's unwavering commitment to fighting for its members' rights and ensuring that they are treated fairly and with respect.

In response to questions about the challenges of inflation and worker salaries, Bryant highlighted the IAM's ongoing efforts to negotiate fair collective bargaining agreements with companies that may have mismatched expectations. He emphasized the importance of companies adhering to the Trump administration's support for skilled workers and ensuring that they pay skilled wages to attract and retain top talent.

The IAM's growth and achievements serve as a powerful reminder of the union's unwavering commitment to advocating for workers' rights and fostering a more inclusive and diverse labor movement. As the IAM continues to expand its reach and influence, it remains a beacon of hope and progress in the ever-evolving landscape of the labor movement.
