HPE's Quantum Partnership Is A PR Stunt And The Stock Is Not Undervalued

The answer to that question is no — because the partnership has no disclosed financial terms, the quantum market is a rounding error against HPE's $70.5 billion market cap, and the real risk isn't that investors are missing an undervalued option. The Quantum Announcement: Eight Partners, Zero Dollars Disclosed
At HPE Discover in Las Vegas on June 15, 2026, Hewlett PackardHPE-- Enterprise announced expanded relationships with eight companies — Intel, IQM, Qblox, Quantinuum, QuEra Computing, Quantum Machines, Rigetti, and Riverlane. The press release described the effort as building a "full-stack hybrid quantum supercomputing platform" that combines classical supercomputing with quantum processors across four qubit modalities: neutral atom, ion trap, superconducting, and silicon spin.
That sounds impressive until you read the fine print. Every one of these eight relationships is classified as a research collaboration. No financial terms were disclosed. No contract values were announced. No revenue commitments exist on either side. A follow-up announcement with Quantinuum on June 21 used language like "explore hybrid reference architectures" and "validate application workflows." The word "explore" does not generate revenue.
HPE's strategic thesis is that it can avoid building quantum hardware — which is an extraordinarily capital-intensive race with no clear winner across competing qubit modalities — and instead capture value by providing the classical orchestration layer that connects quantum processors to existing HPC infrastructure. That is a defensible infrastructure bet in principle. It is not a revenue event. It is not a valuation catalyst.
The Quantum Market Is $2.3 Billion. HPE Is Worth $70.5 Billion.
The entire global quantum computing market is estimated at roughly $2.3 billion in 2026, with a plausible range of $1.8 billion to $3.0 billion. To put that in perspective: that is smaller than the cybersecurity mesh market and comparable to quantum-dot display materials. At a 30% compound annual growth rate — which is itself optimistic — the market reaches $6.6 billion by 2030.
Leading pure-play quantum vendor IonQ reported $64.7 million in Q1 2026 revenue, with full-year guidance of $260 million to $270 million. That is IonQ's total addressable universe for the entire year. D-Wave earned $8.8 million in 2024. Rigetti earned $10.8 million. These are the companies actually building and selling quantum hardware.
Against HPE's ~$38.8 billion in trailing revenue, even the most optimistic quantum infrastructure share is a fraction of a percentage point. You cannot call a company "undervalued" because it has research partnerships in a market that represents 6% of its current revenue and may not reach double-digit percent of revenue for another decade.
What Actually Drove The Stock Up 121% Year-To-Date
HPE's stock has gained 121.6% year-to-date and 154% on a rolling annual basis, surging over 20% in a single session in June after its earnings beat showed AI-driven server demand "blew away analyst expectations." That rally is real. The question is what it left behind.
HPE's revenue has been accelerating hard: $9.1 billion in Q3 2025, $9.7 billion in Q4, $9.3 billion in Q1 2026, and $10.7 billion in Q2 2026. Revenue growth is running at 22.6% year-over-year. Gross profit growth is even faster at 38.3%. Free cash flow came in at $3.99 billion trailing twelve months with a 10.3% FCF margin.
The problem for the "undervalued" thesis is what the multiples now imply. At $70.5 billion market cap and roughly $2.50 in trailing EPS, the arithmetic P/E is around 21x. The market data tool reports 48.9x, which suggests the consensus is pricing in significant special items or using a narrower earnings definition — either way, forward earnings expectations have been bid up aggressively. The stock trades at 17.1x EV/EBITDA and $54.2 billion in total debt sits on a balance sheet with only $5.3 billion in cash, leaving roughly $49 billion in net debt against $25.4 billion in equity.
Compare that to Dell at 34.9x PE and IBM at 20.9x PE. HPE is not the cheapest server name. It is not the highest-margin. Its operating margin of 3.75% is structurally thin. Its ROIC of 4.2% tells you that capital is being deployed at a cost that barely clears the hurdle. The stock is up because AI server demand is real. That doesn't mean the leverage isn't now baked in.
The Debt Load Is The Part Nobody Is Talking About
With $54.2 billion in total debt and only $3.99 billion in trailing free cash flow, HPE would need roughly 13.6 years of current FCF generation to retire its debt entirely — and that assumes no new borrowings, no dividend increases, no buybacks, and no downturn. In reality, the company generated that FCF on a year where revenue accelerated and gross profit growth nearly quadrupled its prior pace. The debt-to-equity ratio of 83.8% (using net debt) or over 200% (using gross debt) is the kind of leverage that looks manageable in a bull cycle and punitive when the AI server cycle slows.
The FCF margin of 10.3% looks healthy in isolation. But capital expenditures ran $2.37 billion on the trailing twelve months, and the company's 3.75% operating margin means that a modest revenue deceleration translates directly into debt service risk. This is not a company with margin cushion.
"Undervalued" Is The Wrong Framing Entirely
The competitor article's question presumes that quantum partnerships are an optionality that the market has overlooked. They haven't. The market priced the AI server earnings beat that sent the stock up 20% in June. The quantum announcement is noise on top of that signal — a forward-looking research initiative in an industry that, by its own maturity scoring, rates 20 out of 100.
The cross-currents here are clear:

It is not as good as it looks. HPE is a leveraged infrastructure company riding an AI server wave that has already sent its stock up more than 100% year-to-date. Dressing that move up as "undervalued quantum optionality" confuses a press conference with a revenue stream and a research memorandum with a contract. Any astute infrastructure investor would have noticed that the $54 billion debt load doesn't disappear when you announce eight research relationships.
The investor implication is straightforward: if you own HPE, your thesis is AI servers, not quantum computing. Price it accordingly. The quantum partnerships add no near-term optionality to justify ignoring the leverage, and the stock's 121% YTD move means the AI server story is already reflected in a price that carries the risk of a correction when growth inevitably moderates.
