HPE just reported the best quarter in its history, and its stock is up roughly 127% over the past year. So the CEO's message was less about the results than about the one thing holding them back. The gap is not subtle. In the quarter ended July 31, HPEHPE-- booked $2.4 billion in new AI systems orders, pushed its AI backlog to a record $6.8 billion, and grew total orders 42% year over yearroughly 3.5 times faster than the revenue it actually shipped. That is the whole story in one number: demand is running far ahead of what the company can deliver, and the reason is not weak appetite but components it cannot get enough of — DDR5 and DDR4 memory, NAND flash, and the wafer capacity behind them. A memory shortage born of the AI buildout is squeezing the very chips that go into servers.

For a retail investor, HPE is a clean case study in the difference between an order and a delivered sale. A backlog is a promise; revenue and margin are what the promise becomes. HPE is living inside that gap right now, and the stock's run — up 126.6% year to date to a $72 billion market cap — means the market has already paid for the "exceptional demand" half of the message. The open question is the other half: how much of that record backlog turns into profit, and at what margin.

The same shortage that caps volume is inflating margin

Here is the counterintuitive twist. The component scarcity that limits how many servers HPE can ship is the same scarcity lifting what it charges for the ones it does ship. HPE reported a record 40.4% non-GAAP gross margin, up 1,050 basis points from a year ago, and a record $1.11 in non-GAAP earnings per share — the first quarter it has ever cleared a dollar.

But management was careful to say the record will not hold. CFO Marie Myers described a "normalization" from that gross margin; HPE guides fiscal 2027 operating margin to 14–15%, down from the 16.2% it just posted, and it flags higher AI-systems mix and pricing pressure as the reasons. The scarcity that is temporarily fattening margins is also temporary in the other direction — management has said meaningful supply relief is unlikely before 2028, when new factories and capacity come online. Supply availability is not expected to improve until 2028.

Read the two sides of the constraint separately. Short term, it caps volume and inflates price. When relief eventually arrives, volume should rise but price-driven margin should unwind — and HPE is telling you the net effect on operating margin is down. A stock that has more than doubled in a year built on "record" margins and a "record" backlog is partly paying for a scarcity windfall management itself calls temporary.

Commitments are confidence and leverage at once

The second reason to treat HPE's booming demand with care is that HPE is responding by taking on bigger commitments — the dual signal at the heart of any capacity-constrained cycle. To secure the working parts it needs, HPE has more than doubled its networking purchase commitments and is signing multi-year supply agreements. That is a bet on durability: lock in capacity now against demand you expect to last. But it is also a fixed obligation. If demand, mix, or pricing shifts before those units are bought, HPE is left holding purchase commitments and inventory at elevated component costs.

The case for that bet is stronger because HPE's AI demand is broadening — beyond hyperscaler training clusters into inference, enterprise, and agentic workloads, marked this quarter by a $3.5 billion inferencing deal with a hyperscaler and an expanded collaboration with Oracle on gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure. Inference is where the contested share of this cycle moves next, and that is HPE's home turf: servers, networking, and storage rather than accelerator silicon.

Still, the commitments frame the real risk. HPE raised full-year 2026 guidance again — non-GAAP EPS to $3.75–$3.85 and free cash flow to at least $3.75 billion — and laid out a fiscal 2027 framework of 13–17% revenue growth with EPS of $4.40–$4.60, not including the AMD Helios opportunity in that number. The company is compounding; the question is only whether the compounding is being priced in faster than supply allows it to be delivered. My own discipline here is opportunity cost: when a thesis is this digested, the near-term return curve — not the long-term story — decides whether capital already up roughly 127% in a year is better left here or deployed where demand and supply line up better. HPE's demand is exceptional. Its proof will be whether it can turn a record backlog into durable margin before the scarcity that fattened the margin goes away.
