Honda's Anna Engine Plant in Ohio celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking the largest Honda auto engine plant in the world. Built in 1985, the plant has expanded tenfold with $2.9 billion investments and produced over 32.5 million engines. It now supports production of ICE, hybrid, and EV models using flexible manufacturing methods.

Honda's Anna Engine Plant (AEP) in Ohio is marking its 40th anniversary, celebrating its status as the largest Honda auto engine plant in the world. Established in 1985, the plant has grown tenfold in size and capacity, thanks to $2.9 billion in investments over the past four decades. AEP has produced over 32.5 million engines, including for automobiles and powersports products, and has played a pivotal role in Honda's powertrain innovations.

The plant, located in Anna, Ohio, has expanded from a modest 200,000 square-foot facility with 94 production associates to a sprawling 2.8-million square-foot facility employing 2,900 associates. Its production capabilities range from ferrous casting, high-pressure die-casting, and machining to heat treating and assembly, making it one of the industry's most comprehensive and interconnected powertrain facilities [1].

AEP's production history includes a variety of engines for performance vehicles and highly fuel-efficient hybrid-electric models. Notable power units include the 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, the 190-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and the 355 hp 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine [1].

The plant's adaptability and flexibility are evident in its support for internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid powertrains, and all-electric motors. As part of the Honda EV Hub, AEP has added three new processes to produce the aluminum EV battery case, including megacasting, friction stir welding (FSW), and Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) machining. When EV production begins in 2026, the EV battery case megacast at AEP will be combined with the battery module to create the EV battery pack for Honda and Acura EVs [1].

Honda's investments in Ohio manufacturing operations have been substantial, with over $13 billion in capital investments supporting the production of 460,000 Honda and Acura automobiles, 1.18 million automobile engines, and over 1 million automobile transmissions and two-motor hybrid systems [1]. The company's five Ohio manufacturing facilities include three auto plants, the Marysville Auto Plant, East Liberty Auto Plant, and Performance Manufacturing Center, as well as the Anna Engine Plant and transmission plant in Russells Point.

Honda's commitment to flexible manufacturing and its ability to produce a wide range of engines and powertrains have positioned the Anna Engine Plant as a key player in Honda's global operations. As the company continues to invest in EV production, AEP's role in supporting both ICE and hybrid models, while preparing for the future of EV production, underscores its strategic importance.
