A recent poll shows that the lead of the U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Harris over former President and Republican presidential candidate Trump has narrowed to just 3 percentage points, indicating that less than a month away from the U.S. election, the two presidential candidates are still evenly matched.
The U.S. 2024 election is scheduled for November 5th, when not only the presidency will be contested, but all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 33 of the 100 seats in the Senate will also be up for election, to form the 119th U.S. Congress.
According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, Harris is leading Trump with 46% to his 43%, just within the 3-point margin of error. The poll was conducted online from October 4th to 7th among 1,272 adults across the United States, including 1,076 registered voters, of whom 969 were deemed most likely to vote on Election Day.
The previous Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted from September 20th to 23rd, had Harris leading Trump by 6 percentage points.
From the poll, Trump is trusted more on economic and immigration issues. Respondents generally believe that the economy is the top issue facing the United States, with about 44% of people thinking Trump has better solutions to the problem of rising living costs, while 38% of respondents chose Harris.
Trump has recently been promoting the threat of illegal immigration at campaign rallies, and he has repeatedly stated that if he wins the election, he will carry out large-scale deportations of illegal immigrants. The number of immigrants in the United States has reached the highest level in a century.
According to the poll, about 53% of voters agree with the statement that illegal immigration poses a threat to public safety, while 41% disagree. In the Reuters/Ipsos poll in May this year, the comparison was 45% to 46%, indicating that as the U.S. election approaches, Americans' concerns about illegal immigration have increased.
In the latest poll, voters trust Harris more in terms of mental sharpness, with 55% of people agreeing that she is mentally sharp and able to handle challenges, while only 46% feel the same way about Trump. Harris will turn 60 this month, while Trump is currently 78 years old, with an age difference of nearly 20 years between them.
Since Harris joined the campaign at the end of July, she has been leading Trump in the six Reuters/Ipsos polls that have been published.
Nevertheless, in several swing states that are crucial to the U.S. election, the support rates of Harris and Trump are neck and neck, with many results within the margin of error.
Stay tuned for the heartbeat of the US election and political.
