Harris Catches Up to Trump on Economic Issues, New Poll Shows
According to a poll jointly by the Financial Times and the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, the number of voters who trust Kamala Harris in handling the economy has caught up with those who trust Donald Trump.
The survey found that 42% of voters trust Harris on economic issues, while 41% trust Trump. In other words, Harris leads Trump by a margin of 1%.
The poll results were released on Sunday and were based on a survey of 1001 registered voters between August 1 and August 5.
Although this is a very slim lead, even within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, it marks a shift in the wind direction.
In the survey conducted by the same institutions last month, only 35% of voters said they approved of Biden's handling of the economy, lagging behind Trump's 41%.
In addition, some other polls have previously shown that, at least on economic issues, Trump is significantly ahead of Harris. For example, according to the recent CNBC All-American Economic Survey, voters believe that their economic situation would be better under Trump's leadership than under Harris. The proportion of voters supporting both on the economy is 2:1.
Harris said on Saturday that she will officially announce her economic policy platform in the coming days.
After several years of high inflation, the economy is one of the most concerning issues for American voters. For voters, to what extent Harris's economic policy will differ from the current government is what they care about the most.
Among the respondents of the survey, 60% said that Harris should either completely break away from Biden's economic policy or make significant changes to Biden's agenda.
It is worth noting that Trump often uses voters' pessimism about the U.S. economy to pull votes. For example, when the market plummeted last week, Trump attributed all of this to Harris and the Biden administration, calling it the Kamala Crash.
As the above poll results were announced, another poll showed that Harris is four percentage points ahead of Trump in three battleground states. This has reversed the previous trend. For nearly a year, polls in these states have shown that Trump's approval rating is either on par with Democratic President Biden or slightly ahead.
Harris's support rate in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan has reached 50%, higher than Trump's 46%.
However, this poll also shows that in terms of who can better govern the economy, Trump continues to maintain an advantage, leading Harris by 52% to 46% in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and by 51% to 45% in Michigan.
