Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace have signed deals with BlackBerry and L3 Harris MAPPS for submarine business cooperation. The agreements focus on enhancing their submarine communication and navigation capabilities. Hanwha AeroSpace, a Korean defense equipment manufacturer, is expanding its submarine business through partnerships with technology companies.

Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace, South Korean defense firms, have signed memoranda of understanding with BlackBerry and L3 Harris MAPPS to enhance their submarine communication and navigation capabilities. The agreements aim to boost cooperation in the submarine business, with a focus on integrating advanced technologies into their operations.

Hanwha Ocean, which specializes in shipbuilding and defense, has signed MOUs with BlackBerry and L3 Harris MAPPS during CANSEC, Canada's largest defense exhibition held in Ottawa on May 28-29. BlackBerry, a leading Canadian cybersecurity and secure communication software specialist, will collaborate with Hanwha Ocean on cybersecurity solutions, while L3 Harris MAPPS, a subsidiary of L3 Harris Technologies, will work on integrated simulation and platform automation [1].

These partnerships come as Hanwha Ocean seeks to strengthen its presence in the Canadian submarine market. The Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), which aims to introduce 12 3,000-ton class submarines next year, presents a significant opportunity for Hanwha Ocean. The company's KSS-III (Jangbogo-III Batch-II class submarine), which features lithium-ion batteries and Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, is considered optimal for Canadian waters, particularly for Arctic operations [1].

Michael Coulter, CEO of Hanwha Global Defense, expressed confidence in the potential synergy between Hanwha Ocean, BlackBerry, and L3 Harris MAPPS. He stated, "There is infinite potential for synergy in the cooperative relationship between Hanwha Ocean, BlackBerry, and L3 Harris MAPPS. Through this MOU signing, Hanwha Ocean will establish full-fledged cooperative relationships with these partner companies, contributing to further solidifying and strengthening the relationship between Korea and Canada" [1].

Hanwha Aerospace, another Korean defense equipment manufacturer, is also expanding its submarine business through partnerships with technology companies. The company signed similar MOUs with BlackBerry and L3 Harris MAPPS, indicating a broader strategy to leverage advanced technologies in their submarine operations.

These deals highlight the growing importance of international cooperation in the defense industry. By partnering with leading technology firms, Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace aim to enhance their submarine capabilities and strengthen their competitive position in the global market.
