The U.S. government shutdown is causing staffing shortages among air traffic controllers, leading to flight cancellations and delays at major airports. Airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines have been impacted, with 1,400 flights canceled and 2,700 delayed as of Sunday. The Federal Aviation Administration has instructed airlines to cut 4% of daily flights, which will increase to 6% on Tuesday and 10% by November 14. The shutdown has disrupted over 4 million passengers' travel plans and is expected to have a daily economic impact of $285 million to $580 million by next Friday.
