Gov. Ron DeSantis signs bill to ban fluoride in Florida water system
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law on May 16, 2025, that prohibits local governments from adding fluoride to their water systems. This measure, known as SB 700, also referred to as the "Florida Farm Bill," makes Florida the second state in the country to implement such a ban, following Utah's lead in late March [1].
The bill, which will go into effect on July 1, 2025, effectively bans the use of certain additives in water systems, including fluoride. DeSantis, a Republican, argued that fluoridation is a form of "forced medication" that violates "informed consent" [2]. He emphasized that there are alternative ways for residents to access fluoride if desired, such as adding it to their own water supply at home.
The decision has sparked controversy among public health advocates and dental professionals who support water fluoridation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has long considered fluoridation one of the greatest public health achievements of the last century due to its role in reducing tooth decay [3]. However, opponents of fluoridation, including Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., argue that it has no systemic advantage and can negatively impact health.
Some local governments in Florida have already voted to remove fluoride from their water systems ahead of the statewide ban. Miami-Dade County commissioners, for instance, voted to override a veto by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and move forward with plans to remove fluoride from the county's drinking water [1].
The bill also includes provisions related to agricultural lands, drones, and mail theft, among other issues. It is supported by various agricultural associations and has drawn criticism from those who believe it disregards the consensus of medical experts on the benefits of water fluoridation.
