Google Services Partially Down in Turkey and Europe Due to Government and Watchdog Actions

Google's services are partly down in Turkey and parts of Europe due to a government decision and a watchdog's intervention. The company operates a holding company with six areas of activity, including search engine, video hosting, messaging service, home automation, biotechnology research, artificial intelligence research, investment services, and fiber optic internet access network infrastructure. Net sales are distributed geographically across the US, Americas, Europe/Middle East/Africa, and Asia/Pacific regions.

Google's services have been partially disrupted in Turkey and several European countries, including Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Armenia, the Netherlands, and Germany. The outage, which has affected search queries, YouTube, and other services, has been attributed to a government decision in Turkey and a recent intervention by the French data protection authority, the CNIL.

In Turkey, the National Cyber Incident Response Center has requested a technical report from Google regarding the cause of the outage. Turkish Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Omer Fatih Sayan stated that Google is experiencing an outage affecting Android and related services in Turkey and the European region. The situation is being closely monitored [1].

Separately, the CNIL has imposed a €325 million fine on Google for violating cookie consent regulations. The ruling centers on Google's "cookie wall" during account creation and unsolicited Gmail ads, citing insufficient transparency and lack of user consent. This is the third significant cookie-related fine against Google from the CNIL in recent years [2].

The CNIL emphasized stricter enforcement of EU data laws, highlighting the growing regulatory focus on user consent and transparency in digital platforms. Google has been given six months to bring its systems into compliance, with potential daily penalties of €100,000 for both Google and its Irish subsidiary if it fails to do so [2].

The outage and the CNIL fine highlight the challenges large tech companies face in aligning their business models with evolving legal standards. As digital platforms rely heavily on data collection for targeted advertising, the CNIL's actions signal a broader shift toward stricter enforcement of user rights and the need for more transparent consent mechanisms [2].
