Google and MediaTek: A New Era in AI Chip Development

Cyrus ColeMonday, Mar 17, 2025 10:01 am ET
3min read

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology, google and MediaTek are poised to make a significant impact with their upcoming partnership. According to recent reports, the two tech giants are preparing to collaborate on the development of next-generation AI chips, leveraging their respective strengths in AI and semiconductor design. This partnership could reshape the competitive landscape in the AI chip market, driving innovation and efficiency in various industries.

The Strategic Advantages of the Partnership

The collaboration between Google and MediaTek brings several strategic advantages to the AI chip market. One of the key benefits is the development of a new Filogic connectivity chipset with a native Thread radio. This chipset, the Filogic MT7903, supports tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, and IEEE 802.15.4/Thread radios, making it an "all-in-one" wireless package. The integration of Thread support is crucial because Thread is a protocol designed for smart home device intercommunication, which is faster and more efficient than Bluetooth and WiFi. By including a Thread radio, the chipset can facilitate seamless communication between smart home devices, enhancing the overall user experience.

Additionally, the MT7903 chipset boasts energy efficiency thanks to the Thread border router offload feature. This feature allows the main SoC to go into a low-power mode without losing its connection to the network of smart home devices, which translates to a more sustainable smart home ecosystem. This energy efficiency is a significant advantage in the competitive landscape, as it addresses the growing demand for sustainable and power-efficient technologies.

The collaboration between Google and MediaTek also extends to the development of AI server chips. MediaTek is working on AI server chips that use the arm preparation set architecture, which is a departure from the x86 architecture that currently dominates the server market. This move could potentially disrupt the market by offering a more cost-effective and power-efficient alternative to existing solutions. MediaTek's adoption of TSMC's 3nm process for these chips further enhances their performance and energy efficiency, giving them a competitive edge in the mid-to-low-end market.

Moreover, the partnership leverages MediaTek's expertise in semiconductor design and Google's prowess in smart home technology. This combination could elevate the Google Home ecosystem and the broader smart home experience. For instance, the integration of native Thread support into Android 15 and the inclusion of Thread radios in Pixel 9 devices demonstrate Google's commitment to expanding Thread adoption. The Filogic MT7903 chipset, with its support for Matter, a standard that allows devices from different smart home platforms to work together, further enhances interoperability and compatibility.

Enhancing AI Capabilities with MediaTek Technologies

The integration of MediaTek's AI technologies, such as the MediaTek AI Processing Unit (APU) and NeuroPilot SDK, significantly enhances the capabilities of Google's AI chips. MediaTek's APUs are designed to implement AI acceleration in edge devices, offering 27x greater power efficiency compared with a typical CPU and 15x greater power efficiency compared with a typical GPU. This efficiency is crucial for devices that require high performance without excessive power consumption, such as smartphones, tablets, AI+IoT devices, smart TVs, and networking SoCs.

The MediaTek NeuroPilot SDK further simplifies the development process by providing a set of software tools and APIs that optimize AI-based applications for use on MediaTek SoCs. This SDK supports many mainstream AI frameworks, including TensorFlow, Caffe, ONNX, and transformers, and it works with both Linux and Android OS. During the post-silicon stage, developers can deploy their trained AI model on their platform to measure the performance directly. This platform-aware optimization ensures that AI tasks are sent to the most appropriate processing unit, whether it's the CPU, GPU, APU, or DSP, thereby maximizing efficiency and performance.

Potential Risks and Challenges

While the partnership between Google and MediaTek holds great promise, it also faces several potential risks and challenges. Technological risks include the complexity of integrating multiple wireless protocols into a single chipset and ensuring energy efficiency. Regulatory challenges involve compliance with various standards and certifications, as well as ensuring data privacy and security. Market-related risks include the need for widespread adoption by device manufacturers and consumers, as well as competition from other players in the smart home market.

To mitigate these risks, both companies should leverage their respective expertise, conduct thorough testing and validation, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, implement robust security measures, and focus on marketing and innovation. By doing so, they can address the challenges and ensure the success of their collaboration.

Conclusion

The partnership between Google and MediaTek to develop next-generation AI chips has the potential to revolutionize the AI chip market. By leveraging their respective strengths in AI and semiconductor design, the two companies can drive innovation and efficiency in various industries. While there are potential risks and challenges, both companies are well-positioned to address them and ensure the success of their collaboration. The future of AI chips looks bright, and this partnership is poised to play a significant role in shaping it.

$ARM makes money from license fees and royalties. It's not clear how tariffs would affect that, but once they release their own chip, they'll be hit by tariffs on those. Tariffs should have a minor impact on ARM. They're in everything from doorbells to data centers.
