Google (GOOGL.US) unveils quantum computing chip, shakes up US quantum computing stocks
Google (GOOG.US, GOOGL.US) launched its so-called "incredible" quantum computing chip on Monday. The tech giant said in a study published in Nature that the chip, named "Willow," could handle complex calculations in five minutes, while the world's most powerful supercomputer would take "10 to the 25th power" years to complete. "We believe Willow is a significant step towards building a practical quantum computer with real-world applications in drug discovery, fusion energy, battery design and more," Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, said on the X platform. Shares of Google rose 0.46% on Monday. Shares of quantum computing companies in the U.S. were mixed on Monday. Rigetti Computing (RGTI.US) rose more than 2%, IonQ Inc (IONQ.US) fell 10%, and D-Wave Quantum (QBTS.US) fell more than 8%.
