Google DeepMind CEO Praises DeepSeek AI, But Warns Against Overhype

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has garnered significant attention following the launch of its AI "reasoning" model, R1. The company's CEO, Demis Hassabis, praised DeepSeek's work, describing it as "probably the best work I've seen come out of China." However, he also cautioned against overhyping the technology, stating that "despite the hype, there's no actual new scientific advance … it's using known techniques [in AI]."

Hassabis' comments come amidst a growing debate surrounding the significance of DeepSeek's AI model. Some experts have praised the model's efficiency and cost-effectiveness, while others have expressed skepticism about the reported hardware usage and investment costs.

DeepSeek AI claims several technological advancements, including:

1. Efficiency: The model is believed to be nearly as powerful as American rivals but far more efficient, using 2000 Nvidia H800 chips to train its 6710 billion parameter V3 model, compared to Meta's 4050 billion parameter Llama 3 model, which used 16384 H100 chips and took 54 days.
2. Cost-effectiveness: The cost of training DeepSeek's V3 model is reported to be around $560 million, significantly lower than the $1.91 billion cost of training Google's Gemini Ultra model.
3. Open-source accessibility: DeepSeek AI is an open-source product, freely available for study, use, and sharing, unlike proprietary models like GPT-4.
4. Multimodal capabilities: DeepSeek AI can process various inputs, including text, images, audio, video, and code, making it a versatile tool for different applications.

These advancements position DeepSeek AI as a competitive alternative to existing AI models, particularly in terms of efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility. However, the validity of these claims is still a subject of debate, with some experts expressing skepticism about the reported hardware usage and investment costs.

Hassabis' comments highlight the importance of maintaining a balanced perspective when evaluating new AI technologies. While DeepSeek AI has made significant strides in efficiency and cost-effectiveness, it is essential to recognize that the model relies on established AI techniques and has not introduced any groundbreaking scientific advancements.

As the AI industry continues to evolve, it is crucial for investors and stakeholders to stay informed about the latest developments and assess the true potential of new technologies. By doing so, they can make more informed decisions and capitalize on the growth opportunities that the AI sector offers.

DeepMind's Gemini Ultra can't compete on cost with DeepSeek. That's a big deal for budget-conscious businesses looking for AI punch.
