Methane is roughly 85 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year window, but it breaks down in about a decade. So a ton of methane avoided delivers several times the near-term cooling of a ton of CO2 removed, at a fraction of the cost per unit of avoided warming. Treat methane abatement as the cheapest "emergency brake" on near-term warming while the permanent CO2 removal problem gets solved at greater expense and scale. Mitti Labs' differentiation is field-level verification rather than regional estimation. It runs a GeoAI platform combining synthetic-aperture-radar satellite imagery at 50-centimeter-to-10-meter resolution with on-the-ground field data to train the models, tracking flooding and crop growth plot by plot. It has issued credits under the Gold Standard's Tier 3 methodology — the tier that means direct measurement rather than modeled defaults — and lists Isometric as an alternative registry, with an A rating from independent ratings firm Sylvera. Google itself subjected the technology to its own scrutiny and site visits before signing. That is more verification spine than most agricultural credits ever get.

But the structural risk hasn't gone anywhere: the credited tons only count if farmers actually adopt and maintain AWD, if the reductions are truly additional to what India would have done anyway, and if field-level satellite math is honest at the scale of tens of thousands of smallholders. The market's history says that's the fragile link — the place most previous "high-integrity" ag credits came apart. Google hedging by promising to double up with permanent removal later is a quiet admission that even the buyer trusts the credit less than its label claims.

What this means for Alphabet, which is a different question

For Alphabet shareholders, the deal is, in a word, immaterial. The price was not disclosed, but whatever it is, spread over four years it is a rounding error against a company growing revenue about 20% a year while pouring capital expenditure on the order of $130 billion a year into data centers. No line on the income statement moves; no multiple changes. Anyone reading the headline as a Google climate spend story should re-anchor: this is a handful of millions against a capex cycle of hundreds of billions.

The useful question isn't whether Google bought a million credits. It's what the deal reveals about the trajectory underneath: a pledge to be net-zero in 2030 while the thing driving the business — AI infrastructure — keeps pushing the footprint up 18% a year, and the offsets available to balance it are single-digit percentage points of that footprint, hard to verify, and designed to be temporary. The single measure worth watching is not the press release's "one million credits." It's the ratio of retirable, independently verified tons to a footprint that grew 18% last year.
