Global PC shipments totaled more than 63 million units in the second quarter of 2025, marking a 4.4% increase from the same period in 2024, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. [1][2]
The surge in shipments was driven by several key factors, including increased enterprise demand, Windows 11 desktop upgrades, and AI-ready refreshes, particularly in the education sector. Rishi Padhi, Research Principal at Gartner, noted that enterprise demand outpaced consumer demand, driven by Windows 11 migrations and pandemic-era desktop renewals, while consumer refreshes slowed due to deferred purchases. [1][2]
Regionally, North America saw a decline of 0.5% in PC shipments compared to the same period last year, while the total PC market in APAC remained flat year-over-year. However, the EMEA PC market grew 5.3% year-over-year, indicating signs of a modest recovery and stronger-than-usual seasonal demand. [1][2]
Lenovo emerged as the top performer among the top five vendors, with a 13.9% year-over-year growth in global PC shipments. HP Inc. saw a 3.2% growth, while Dell experienced a 3.0% decline. Apple and ASUS also demonstrated strong growth, with increases of 13.4% and 8.7%, respectively. [1][2]
Looking ahead, Gartner forecasts a 2.4% rise in PC shipments for the year 2025, driven by a tariff-driven front-loaded inventory surge in the first half of 2025 in the U.S., and ongoing Windows 11 replacement cycles in the rest of the world. However, shipment growth is expected to plateau in the second half of 2025 as vendors draw down stock in response to demand, potentially leading to excess inventory by year-end. [1][2]
