Giorgio Armani, the renowned Italian designer and founder of the eponymous fashion empire, passed away in Milan at the age of 91. Known for his influential role in shaping modern fashion and for cultivating a vast, privately held business empire, Armani leaves behind a legacy spanning clothing, beauty, hospitality, and more. His death comes after months of declining health, including his recent decision to skip major fashion events for the first time in his career [2].
Armani, who was both the creative director and CEO of the company he co-founded with Sergio Galeotti in 1975, had always maintained full control over the brand, never accepting external investors or considering a public listing. At the time of his death, the company generated €2.3 billion in revenue in 2024, reflecting the scale of his business and the enduring appeal of his aesthetic [2].
His approach to succession had already been outlined as a "gradual transition" to his closest collaborators and family. Speaking to the Financial Times, Armani emphasized his desire for an "organic" shift, where responsibilities would be passed to individuals like Pantaleo (Leo) Dell’Orco, his longtime right-hand man and head of men’s design, as well as other key team members and family [1]. This succession plan, described as carefully curated rather than abrupt, indicates Armani’s intent to preserve the brand’s identity while ensuring continuity in leadership [1].
The company has taken steps to formalize its long-term governance through the Giorgio Armani Foundation, which was established in 2016. The foundation is tasked with safeguarding the company’s principles, including autonomy, ethical management, and innovation, while also supporting social and public interest projects [2]. This move underscores Armani’s strategic vision to maintain the brand’s independence and long-term stability, even as he steps away from direct leadership [2].
Armani’s influence extended far beyond fashion. His relaxed, fluid tailoring in the 1970s and 1980s redefined the modern wardrobe and made him a favorite of Hollywood stars and global icons. His brand’s expansion into beauty, hospitality, and lifestyle further cemented his status as one of the most versatile and enduring figures in luxury [2]. The Armani Group also boasts a strong financial position, with net cash and financial investments amounting to €1.03 billion by the end of 2023 [2].
Following his passing, the company expressed its commitment to honoring Armani’s legacy by continuing to operate with the same values and principles he championed. A private funeral will be held in Milan, in accordance with his wishes, and the company emphasized that the future of the Armani Group will be guided by the same spirit of innovation, integrity, and excellence that defined his career [2].
