Germany's Boerse Stuttgart Digital Pioneers EU Crypto Regulation with Full MiCA License
Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody, a subsidiary of the Boerse Stuttgart Group, has made history by becoming the first crypto asset service provider in Germany to receive a full license under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This significant milestone, granted by Germany's Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) on January 17, allows the company to operate as a fully licensed crypto asset service provider (CASP) across the European Union.
MiCA, which is set to become operative by the end of 2024, aims to establish clear standards for security and transparency in the crypto industry. Boerse Stuttgart Digital's new license supports the company's goal of providing banks, brokers, and asset managers with a regulated infrastructure for crypto assets. This development comes after Germany's crypto market faced challenges due to the collapse of the German coalition and delayed regulations. However, the German parliament, the Bundestag, managed to pass the relevant bill just before the Christmas holidays, paving the way for Boerse Stuttgart Digital's new license.
Boerse Stuttgart Digital has a strong reputation in the crypto space, with experience in deep crypto and robust ties with institutional partners. For instance, the company has collaborated with DZ Bank to roll out a retail solution for 737 German community banks, with the first pilot program already underway. Additionally, Boerse Stuttgart Digital has a track record of bringing new ventures to life, having worked with Axel Springer to create a joint venture focused on retail users last year.
Looking ahead, Dr. Matthias Voelkel, CEO of Boerse Stuttgart Group, expressed the company's ambition to expand its services and offer integrated solutions for financial institutions across Europe. This strategic move is expected to accelerate the company's growth and facilitate international business expansion. However, Boerse Stuttgart Digital faces competition from other institutions in the crypto space, such as Switzerland's Sygnum Bank, which has accepted more than 20 banks on its books and received a CASP license in Liechtenstein in September.
With its new license, Boerse Stuttgart Digital now stands at the forefront of Germany's crypto world, opening the door for regulated services across the European Union. This development is a significant step towards establishing a more secure and transparent crypto ecosystem in the region.
