German Finance Minister: Trade conflict harms everyone and must be stopped quickly
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has emphasized the urgency of resolving ongoing trade disputes with the United States, asserting that the conflicts are detrimental to all parties involved. Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 finance ministers meeting in Banff, Canada, Klingbeil highlighted the negative impacts of tariffs and uncertainties on the economy and job security [1].The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, including a 25% levy on U.S. imports of steel, aluminum, and cars, have significantly affected the European Union. The EU is keen on defending its interests while seeking an agreement with Washington, with additional reciprocal tariffs potentially reaching 20% if negotiations fail [2].
Klingbeil underscored the importance of international cooperation in light of global upheavals and expressed his eagerness to meet his G7 colleagues in person. The minister reaffirmed the G7's commitment to supporting Ukraine, advocating for a fair and lasting peace, and exploring ways to mobilize private investment for the country's reconstruction following the devastation of the war.
The trade disputes have had significant implications for key industries, including steel and automotive sectors, which are central to the economies of both the EU and the U.S. The global trade landscape continues to be shaped by such disputes, with substantial market volume and value fluctuations affecting various countries [2].
Klingbeil expressed confidence that a joint solution could be reached in the international tariff dispute with the United States. He emphasized that higher tariffs would severely burden the global economy, unsettle financial markets, and ultimately reduce global prosperity. The minister stressed that the task of the G7 is to contribute to security and stability, and that Ukraine can rely on great solidarity and support from the G7 states [1].
