On September 1, the German Defense Minister refuted statements made by the President of the European Commission regarding plans to deploy European troops to Ukraine. The Defense Minister asserted that the President of the European Commission lacked the necessary authorization to discuss such a matter.
On August 31, the President of the European Commission had mentioned that Europe was developing a "very precise plan" to deploy multinational forces to Ukraine as part of the post-conflict security measures. This plan, which could include a European-led force of tens of thousands of troops, would encompass command and control systems, as well as intelligence and surveillance capabilities, and would receive support from the United States.
The Defense Minister's response came after a meeting involving the German Chancellor, the President of the European Commission, and the Secretary General of NATO, where leaders discussed security guarantees for Ukraine. The Defense Minister emphasized that discussions on such matters would only occur after negotiations with all relevant parties. The Defense Minister also stated that the European Union lacks the authority to deploy troops, and therefore, any such considerations would not be confirmed or commented on.
Germany has largely remained silent on discussions about deploying peacekeeping forces to Ukraine to maintain a potential ceasefire. The ruling coalition in Germany has stated that such discussions are premature.
