- Generac's shares rose 38% in 2025 despite 56% free cash flow decline, driven by data-center demand for backup generators.

- The stock trades at 43x trailing earnings and 19x EV/EBITDA, higher than CumminsCMI-- but lower than EatonETN--, despite shrinking cash conversion.

- Management projects 30%+ C&I sales growth through 2027 on $1.6B backlog, but Q2 margin boost included a $71M one-time tariff refund.

- The premium valuation hinges on converting $700M 2027 hyperscale orders to cash flow, with no current support from trailing financials.

Generac HoldingsGNRC-- has had a year headline writers love: shares up roughly 38% year to date, powered by the data-center boom. The same company, though, spent 2025 shrinking its cash flow. Free cash flow fell to $268 million from $605 million the year before — a 56% drop — while operating cash flow slid to $438 million from $741 million. That is the tension a value test has to sit with: a big re-rating standing on a trailing record that just contracted. At roughly $188, GeneracGNRC-- trades near 43 times trailing earnings and about 19 times trailing EV/EBITDA — enterprise value over earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, close to operating profit. On that measure it sits above CumminsCMI-- at about 16 times and below EatonETN-- at about 28 times (Ainvest data). The cash behind it is thin: Ainvest data put trailing-twelve-month free cash flow near $379 million, down about 26% year over year, against roughly $1.06 billion of net debt. A 19-times-EBITDA price tag on a business whose cash conversion just shrank is the sort of gap worth interrogating.
TTM EV/EBITDA: Generac vs. Eaton vs. Cummins Enterprise value / trailing-twelve-month EBITDA (multiple, x)
TTM EV/EBITDA: Generac vs. Eaton vs. CumminsEnterprise value / trailing-twelve-month EBITDA (multiple, x)

Generac trades at ~19x TTM EV/EBITDA, above generator peer Cummins (~16x) but below the broader electrical conglomerate Eaton (~28x).

The first thing to notice is what the market is not paying for. At that same $188 price, Generac's forward price-to-earnings of about 47 runs above its trailing 43. When a forward multiple exceeds the trailing multiple at a single price, the earnings base the market assumes for the year ahead is no larger than what the trailing twelve months already produced. The premium is not buying an expanded earnings denominator. It is buying what management says arrives next.
Here is what has to arrive. Generac's commercial and industrial segment — the large-megawatt backup generators that keep data centers alive — is the machine. Management guided C&I sales up in the low 30s percent for 2026 and pointed to a data-center backlog of roughly $1.6 billion, including a global supply agreement committing nearly $700 million of 2027 volume with a leading hyperscale operator. C&I revenue grew 29% in the second quarter. This is the narrative the whole multiple leans on. There is an asterisk on the margin, though. A pre-tax tariff refund of roughly $71 million in the second quarter lifted gross margin to 44.5% from 39.3% — about 6 percentage points on the quarter — and management still built roughly 1.5 points of it into its full-year adjusted-EBITDA-margin guidance of 20% to 21%. Exclude the refund and the recurring margin band is closer to 18.5% to 19.5%. So the premium rests on a margin that is partly a one-time credit, on growth that has not yet converted to cash, and on a forward earnings number the market is not expanding today. Set against the trailing record, that is the honest read: the ~43 times P/E and ~19 times EV/EBITDA are not cash-backed. They are a forward bet — backlog into revenue, revenue into margin, margin into cash — with a one-off refund adding to the middle step. The multiple only stands up if Generac's free cash flow, $268 million last year, rebuilds well above that on the strength of 2027 backlog shipping. If the C&I growth prints in the guided low 30s and the backlog ships, the premium has a foundation. If backlog slips, or the refund's 1.5 points never turns recurring, the multiple is left with no support in the trailing cash at all.
