It deserves a test instead, because behind it sits a component crack, a paused delivery line, and a jet that is roughly six years late.

The mid-seal is the part that ties the GE9X's front and rear sections together. The problem surfaced in January 2026, when a crack turned up in a 777X flight-test engine during a shop visit. GE disclosed it in February and says it had the root cause worked out and a fix finalized by April. The sequence matters only because the reassurance has to be read against it: this is a freshly discovered, found-in-testing defect on the world's largest commercial jet engine, and the sole powerplant for the 777X — there is no second engine supplier to absorb a slip.

What separates this reassurance from a typical keynote promise is that GE built the fix to decouple from the certification critical path.

The redesigned mid-seal is already being fitted to production engines that began shipping to Boeing in the third quarter.
