The Dublin Bay Power Plant, commissioned in 2002, currently generates up to 415 Megawatts (MW) using a single-shaft GT26 gas turbine. The modernization project is expected to add nearly 30 MW of reliable power, helping to improve the stability of the national grid and power more Irish homes [1].
The project aims to assist ESB's decarbonization plans by installing upgrades with the potential to burn hydrogen blends in the future. GE Vernova will implement its GT26 High Efficiency (HE) upgrade along with its SEMIPOL™ technology for Static Excitation Equipment (SEE) and Startup Frequency Converter (SFC) [1].
The GT26 HE upgrade integrates advanced technology from GE Vernova's F and H class fleets, including additive manufactured parts and innovations in aerodynamics, materials, and combustion. This upgrade is expected to deliver efficiency gains of up to 1.8% at baseload, leading to a 5% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions [1].
The SEMIPOL™ technology will enhance grid stability through advanced excitation and frequency conversion systems, allowing for smooth startups and reducing mechanical stress, thereby extending equipment life and lowering maintenance costs [1].
The project aligns with ESB's Net Zero by 2040 carbon emissions strategy, aiming to deliver more power while being more efficient with lower emissions and enabling future hydrogen blends [1].
