GE Vernova and AWS: A Strategic Partnership for Data Center Electrification and Decarbonization

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a strategic framework agreement (SFA) with GE Vernova, a global leader in energy technology and digital solutions. This collaboration aims to support AWS's data center scaling, advance grid security and reliability, and decarbonize electric power systems. The agreement focuses on several key areas, including electrification systems, renewable energy, power generation, innovation, and services, as well as cloud migration and digital innovation.

Electrification Systems

GE Vernova will provide AWS with turnkey substation solutions to enable connectivity of AWS data centers to the grid. This includes expansion of major electrical equipment, project management, and construction support across multiple sites globally. This collaboration will help AWS obtain reliable, cost-effective, and more sustainable electricity for its data centers, supporting its growth objectives.

Renewables

GE Vernova will collaborate with AWS to enhance the path for commercializing onshore wind development projects. This will help AWS reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to its sustainability goals while also potentially lowering energy costs. AWS's commitment to renewable energy is evident in its plans to power its global infrastructure with 100% renewable energy by 2025. As of 2024, AWS has achieved 90% renewable energy usage.

Power Generation, Innovation, and Services

GE Vernova and AWS will explore additional opportunities for GE Vernova to provide power generation equipment and services to AWS. This could include advanced power generation technologies that improve efficiency and reduce emissions, further supporting AWS's growth and sustainability objectives.
