United Airlines Expands Commitment to GE Aerospace’s GEnx Engines for Boeing 787 Fleet
United Airlines has finalized a significant order for GE Aerospace’s GEnx-1B engines to power 35 Boeing 787 aircraft, including 20 firm 787-10 Dreamliners and 15 firm 787s from a prior order. The deal, valued at over $1.8 billion (USD) in list price, includes five additional aircraft options firmed from a previous agreement. Combined with six GEnx-1B-powered 787s already in operation, United now holds 65 orders for these engines, solidifying its position as the largest operator of GEnx-1B engines globally.
This order aligns with United’s broader strategy to modernize its long-haul fleet. The airline is phasing out older aircraft, such as the 767 and early 777 models, while prioritizing fuel-efficient, widebody aircraft for both high-demand routes and thinner international markets. The 787’s advanced aerodynamics and GEnx engines reduce fuel consumption by 20–25% compared to older fleets, addressing fuel costs, which remain the largest expense for long-haul operations.
The GEnx-1B engine, the best-selling variant for the 787, has logged over 60,000 flight hours since its 2012 debut. It offers 15% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions compared to GE’s CF6 engine, alongside NOx reductions of up to 55% below regulatory limits. These environmental benefits align with United’s sustainability goals and GE’s “ecomagination” initiative, which emphasizes cost-effective, eco-friendly aviation technologies.
GE Aerospace’s GEnx family, with over 1,300 engines on order, remains a key growth driver for the company. The order also underscores the collaborative nature of modern engine production, involving international partners such as IHI Corporation (Japan), MTU (Germany), and Safran (France).
While United has not yet selected engines for 56 additional 787-10 conversions slated for 2028 deliveries, the current agreement reinforces GE’s competitive position in the narrowbody engine market amid rivalry with Rolls-Royce.
This transaction highlights United’s strategic focus on operational efficiency and environmental performance, while GE Aviation strengthens its market leadership in next-generation jet engine technology.
