French President Macron appoints Sebastien Lecornu as new prime minister - BFM

French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu as the new prime minister following the resignation of Francois Bayrou. Bayrou's government collapsed after a parliamentary confidence vote against his unpopular budget-tightening plans, with 364 lawmakers voting to oust him and 194 supporting him .

Lecornu, an early ally of Macron, has been a strong candidate for the premiership. Macron's office has been considering this option for some time, with the president pushing for a "choice from the heart" for his next prime minister . The appointment comes amid growing political instability, with anti-government protests and labor unions planning major demonstrations.

Markets remained largely stable following Bayrou's ousting, with investors now awaiting Fitch's review of France's sovereign rating on Friday . The new prime minister will face the daunting task of uniting a fragmented parliament and securing approval for next year’s budget.
