Freeport-McMoRan CEO Kathleen Quirk said the company would only pursue M&A if "the stars and the moon align." The copper producer is focused on developing existing assets and not counting on deals to grow. Freeport aims to produce 800 million pounds of copper annually outside of traditional mines using novel leaching technology in the U.S. by the end of the decade. The company would be interested in buying a rival copper company or mine that could have synergies with its existing assets and technology.
