Ford Recalls Backup Camera in 1.5 Million Vehicles Amid Safety Concerns

Ford Motor Company is conducting a significant recall involving almost 1.5 million vehicles in the United States, stemming from a malfunction with rear view cameras. Vehicles affected by this recall, which span model years from 2015 to 2019, are experiencing instances where the rear view camera may exhibit a blank or distorted image on the center display screen when the vehicle is in reverse. Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notifications via mail, informing them of the recall and instructing them to bring their automobiles to an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealership. There, a comprehensive inspection will be conducted, and if necessary, the malfunctioning rear view cameras will be replaced at no cost to the vehicle owners.

The Sept. 4 recall notice specifies that this issue could lead to the camera displaying inverted, warped, or no images at all, thereby heightening the risk of backover accidents. In addition to the roughly 1.45 million vehicles in the U.S., the recall also extends to about 122,000 vehicles in Canada and 300,000 in other regions.

The affected models identified by the NHTSA include a host of Ford and Lincoln vehicles such as the 2017-2019 Ford Econoline, 2015-2018 Ford Edge, 2015-2017 Ford Expedition, 2015-2019 Ford F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, 2016-2019 Ford F-550 SD, 2015-2019 Ford Mustang, 2019 Ford Ranger, 2016-2019 Ford Transit, 2015-2018 Ford Transit Connect, 2015-2019 Lincoln MKC, and 2015-2017 Lincoln Navigator.
