The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that the issue affects approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles. Early signs of the problem may include clicking or rattling noises, indicating that the axle bolt has become loose or broken. This could result in damage to the axle hub splines, which transfer power from the axle to the wheels. If the splines are damaged, the vehicle may move unexpectedly while in park, unless the parking brake is engaged, or lose power while driving, increasing crash risk [1].
Ford has stated that the recall is related to a previously identified issue in certain 2021-2023 F-150 models. The company has introduced a new rear axle shaft assembly design, which includes revised spline geometry and an M24 stud/nut for the hub. The affected vehicles are equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy-duty axle with a ¾ float axle design [1].
Dealers will replace the rear axle shaft assemblies free of charge for the affected vehicles. Ford has notified owners directly, providing them with instructions on arranging repairs at authorized dealers. As of July, Ford has received 194 warranty claims related to stripped splines [1].
The recall is a significant development for Ford, highlighting the importance of ongoing vehicle safety and quality control. Investors and financial professionals should monitor the recall's impact on Ford's operational costs and potential reputational damage. The recall may also influence the company's future production and quality assurance measures.
