Ford Motor Company is undertaking a substantial recall affecting over 312,000 vehicles due to potential defects in power brake assist, posing increased crash risks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified that certain issues with the Electronic Brake Booster (EBB) module could result in loss of power while driving, which may significantly extend stopping distances, heightening the likelihood of a crash. This concern is particularly acute when the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, designed to enhance driving safety, are active but may fail to perform as expected due to the malfunction.
The recall impacts a broad range of Ford's 2025 models, including the Lincoln Navigator, F-150, Expedition, Bronco, and Ranger, accounting for a total of 312,120 vehicles. Notably, this recall does not affect any Ford Escapes as previously suggested in inconclusive reports. Ford is addressing the issue by providing software updates to the EBB module, which can be executed either over-the-air or at a dealership, at no cost to vehicle owners.
The automaker expects to begin sending notifications to affected owners through letters slated for dispatch on August 25. Owners are advised to check whether their vehicles are impacted by contacting Ford’s customer service directly.
This announcement follows Ford's recent recall exercise in which approximately 200,000 vehicles were flagged for other electrical system issues earlier this year. However, the current recall is exclusively focused on addressing the potential brake assist failure as highlighted by NHTSA.
For those with vehicles covered by this recall, Ford has made the process straightforward by offering remote updates to the EBB module, or alternatively, by having the modification performed at dealerships. The recall is cataloged under the identifier 25S77 by Ford and recognized as campaign number 25V488000 by the NHTSA.
In a detailed assessment, the automaker has indicated an estimated defect prevalence rate of about 1% among the recalled units, which translates to roughly 3,121 cars potentially exhibiting the issue. Although there has been a report of one low-speed crash possibly connected to the defect, there have been no reports of injuries or fires linked to the brake malfunction.
As part of the consumer alert system, vehicles experiencing a loss in brake power assist will display a notification via the digital instrument cluster and trigger audible warnings. Owners of the affected models can expect comprehensive support from Ford in resolving these issues without financial burden.
This recall initiative underscores Ford's commitment to road safety and consumer trust, ensuring that corrective measures are in place to address the identified deficiencies while maintaining focus on the safety and reliability of their vehicle lineup.
