Ford Motor (F.US) is under investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after its BlueCruise "hands-off the wheel" autonomous driving technology was involved in a crash.

The probe covers about 129,222 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0 (BlueCruise).

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a preliminary investigation into BlueCruise in April 2024 after receiving notifications of two crashes involving Mustang Mach-E vehicles hitting stationary vehicles, both of which occurred at night under lighting conditions and resulted in at least one death.

ODI issued an information request in June for certain information related to crashes, near-crashes, and technical specifications of BlueCruise and other parts of the vehicle's driving automation systems.

In its response, the company said that 2,539,962 Ford and Lincoln vehicles (including test vehicles and comparison vehicles) were equipped with partial driving automation systems.

The agency said: "Based on NHTSA's analysis, limitations in the system to detect stationary vehicles on the highway and in night lighting conditions appear to be a factor in the crashes under investigation and in several apparent similar near-crashes and non-crash reports."

An engineering analysis has been initiated to further investigate these system limitations and assess the driver's ability to respond to conditions beyond the limitations.

During the analysis, the agency expects to conduct vehicle assessments, review additional technical information, and perform additional analysis of the relevant crash and non-crash reports.
