Ford CEO Prefers Waymo's LiDAR Over Tesla's Camera-Only Approach

Ford CEO Jim Farley has expressed skepticism about Tesla's approach to self-driving technology, which relies solely on video cameras and artificial intelligence. Farley emphasized the importance of consumer trust and the need for caution when integrating new technologies into Ford's brand. Farley's comments were made during an interview at the Aspen Ideas Festival. When asked to compare Waymo and Tesla's self-driving systems, Farley stated that Ford finds Waymo's approach more sensible. He acknowledged that both companies have made significant progress in autonomous driving but noted that Ford considers LiDAR technology to be mission-critical. LiDAR, or Light Detection and Ranging, uses laser sensors to create a detailed map of the environment, which Farley believes is essential for safe and reliable self-driving.

Tesla, on the other hand, has taken a "camera-only" approach, relying solely on video cameras and AI to navigate.
