FIFA, the global governing body of football, has announced its plans to leverage Avalanche's network to develop its own dedicated layer-1 blockchain. This initiative is part of FIFA's broader strategy to expand its presence in the Web3 space. The FIFA Blockchain, built on Avalanche's technology, is a customizable layer-1 blockchain that will utilize Avalanche's subnet capabilities. This move comes on the heels of Avalanche's recent major upgrade, Avalanche9000, which aims to attract new developers and encourage the creation of customized layer-1 blockchains.

This is not FIFA's first venture into the blockchain and cryptocurrency realm. In 2022, the organization released a non-fungible token (NFT) collection on the Algorand blockchain in anticipation of the Qatar World Cup. Earlier this year, FIFA hinted at a shift in its strategy, indicating that it would transition its NFT collection to an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain while continuing to pursue Web3 initiatives.

The enthusiasm for NFTs, which saw numerous institutions and corporations jumping on the bandwagon, has significantly waned following the harsh crypto winter that dampened industry sentiment over several years. However, FIFA's continued focus on blockchain technology suggests that the potential use cases for this technology remain robust, and large enterprises are still exploring opportunities within the industry.

John Nahas, the chief business officer at Ava Labs, emphasized the suitability of Avalanche for enterprises and organizations seeking to build custom, high-performance blockchain solutions. He stated, "FIFA’s decision to launch its L1 on Avalanche is a testament to our technology’s ability to support global-scale applications with speed, flexibility, and security."

Currently, FIFA's blockchain initiatives include a World Cup NFT collection and a digital collectibles marketplace. However, the organization has not disclosed any additional plans for future releases on its new blockchain. This strategic move by FIFA underscores the organization's commitment to leveraging blockchain technology to enhance its digital offerings and engage with its global audience in innovative ways.
