The recall includes approximately 18,000 bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp and 26,460 packages of cocktail shrimp, both from Seattle-based Aquastar Corp [1]. The recalled products were sold between July 24 and Aug. 11 in 17 states, with impacted stores including Baker's, Gerbes, Jay C, Kroger, Mariano's, Metro Market, Pay Less Supermarkets, and Pick 'n Save [2].
The FDA has placed the Indonesian supplier PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, operating as BMS Foods, under a full import alert due to the contamination. The agency has warned consumers who have purchased affected shrimp not to consume the products and to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund [2].
Cesium-137, also known as Cs-137, is a man-made radioisotope that can cause long-term health risks, including an elevated risk of cancer. The FDA is investigating reports of Cs-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp processed by BMS Foods [1].
No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, but the FDA is urging consumers to be cautious and avoid consuming the affected products.
