A driver, Wayne Klingberg, is currently on trial for causing the death of his co-worker, Willyam Tiedemann, in a rollover crash north of Adelaide. The trial, which began on July 22, 2025, is being heard before Judge Emily Telfer in South Australia's District Court. Prosecutors have presented dash cam footage that shows Klingberg veering out of his lane 26 times in the 20 minutes before the fatal crash on July 1, 2022.
The prosecution alleges that Klingberg's driving was lethargic and that he was under the influence of prescription medications at the time of the crash. The footage captured Klingberg leaving his Freeling home at approximately 4:45 p.m. for a work trip with Tiedemann in the passenger seat. The video shows Klingberg veering out of his lane multiple times, with the first instance occurring within five minutes of starting the journey.
Prosecuting lawyer Kos Lesses stated that the 20 minutes of driving footage captured on the dash cam is crucial to the prosecution's case. He noted that the footage shows Klingberg's vehicle veering over to the left side of the road or crossing the center line of the road, entering the opposing lane of traffic on multiple occasions. The rollover occurred at a right bend with a 65 km/h advisory speed in a 100 km/h zone.
Lesses argued that the medications in Klingberg's system, which included sedatives, were an "obvious reason or explanation" for his dangerous driving. He also noted that Klingberg was aware of his condition, as evidenced by his statements during the journey, such as "I'll stop in Balaklava and buy an energy drink."
Klingberg has pleaded not guilty to the charge. The trial is ongoing, and experts are expected to provide evidence regarding the impact of the medications on Klingberg's driving and whether any medical issues contributed to the crash.
