I've been very surprised that retail-focused articles continue to present analyst target averages as upside potential as though the number carries independent information. It doesn't. The arithmetic is simple: you take a set of buy-side-biased price targets, average them, subtract the current price, and call the difference "upside." But when Vanguard's own institutional model — the Vanguard Capital Markets Model, built on Monte Carlo simulations of monthly data stretching back to 1960 — has already lowered its 10-year expected annualized return for U.S. equities from 4.9%–6.9% to 4.2%–6.2%, the contrast between sell-side target arithmetic and institutional reality deserves more attention.

Let me decompose the claim.

The "upside" was calculated in May. The market has moved on.

It's whether the earnings trajectory embedded in VUG's price already reflects the next several quarters of that growth. In my opinion, much of it does.

The stronger counterargument: earnings can justify valuation.

The best case for VUG, VOO, and VTI right now is that 31%+ earnings growth makes current multiples irrelevant. If earnings keep accelerating at this rate, the P/E ratio will compress organically even if prices stay flat. That's what happened at the end of 2025, when the forward P/E fell from 22.2 to 20.4 without any price drawdown. Earnings power caught up to the price.

But there's a limit to how long 31% earnings growth sustains, especially when it's driven by a capital spending cycle. Hyperscaler AI capex of $800 billion this year is an extraordinary number — and extraordinary spending cycles tend to face mean reversion. If that spend slows, or if returns on that capital disappoint, the earnings growth rate that's supporting these valuations compresses from below.

So what should an investor actually do?

For investors who want core U.S. equity exposure, VTI remains a rational holding — not because of 18% upside, but because its broad market diversification at a 0.03% expense ratio is hard to beat for a long-term position. I rate it a Hold at current levels: the valuation is rich, but the underlying earnings growth and the low cost of ownership keep it defensible as a core position.

VOO is functionally equivalent for the large-cap investor. Same 0.03% fee, same top holdings, same 1.03% yield, same valuation risk. I rate it a Hold for the same reasons. If you're choosing between VTI and VOO, the decision should come down to whether you want small-cap exposure — not to a claimed upside percentage.

VUG is where the analyst target arithmetic is most misleading. A 21% upside figure on a fund that yields roughly 0.4% and trades at a premium growth multiple is a bet on continued earnings acceleration, not on valuation comfort. I rate it a Hold, not a Buy. The AI story is real, but the fund's concentration in the same three mega-cap names that dominate VOO and VTI means you're taking on extra beta — 1.25 versus 1.0 for the broader index — without getting meaningfully different diversification.

The takeaway is simple: analyst consensus price targets wrapped in "upside potential" language are not an investing thesis. They're a reflection of where the sell-side thinks the market is headed, and the market you're buying into has already heard the same analysts, absorbed the same numbers, and moved the price accordingly. Vanguard's own institutional model, the dividend yields, the P/E ratios, and the concentration in three stocks that dominate all three funds tell a more sober story.
