A landmark Victorian native title ruling has granted traditional owners from the Ngintait, Latji Latji, and Nyeri Nyeri First Nations groups exclusive native title rights over an area along the Murray River in north-west Victoria. The ruling recognizes the traditional owners' rights to move about, camp, hunt, fish, and teach on their land, but does not mean land will be "locked up" or public access will be denied. The Victorian government has confirmed that freehold title takes precedence over exclusive native title rights.
