European Banking Authority Warns Against Using Capital Rules for Defense Spending
The European Banking Authority's top regulator has cautioned against leveraging capital rules to support the region's significant increase in defense spending. Claudia Buch, the head of the European Central Bank's supervisory arm, emphasized the importance of separating prudentialPUK-- objectives from other policy goals. "From a regulatory perspective, I advise and even warn against linking prudential objectives with other policy objectives," Buch stated in an interview. "There are good reasons for us to have a division of labor across different policy areas."
Previously, Europe has employed special capital treatments to support lending to small and medium-sized enterprises. Some political parties have also advocated for favorable loan terms to fund green investments, though these efforts have not been successful. Now, lobbyists are pushing for capital incentives to finance defense initiatives.
