EuroDry's $19M Ekaterini Refinancing: Stronger 2026 Earnings or a Freight-Sensitive Leveraged Bet?

Second-quarter earnings improved before the refinancing stepped in
EuroDry's latest results look more like an operating improvement than a last-minute attempt to avoid a financing wall. In the second quarter, it produced $11.7 million of adjusted EBITDA from an average of 11.0 vessels, while earning $20,398 per day TCE. Shortly after, on July 28, 2026, it signed a term sheet to refinance the Ekaterini with up to $19 million of Alpha Bank financing.
That timing matters. EuroDryEDRY-- is not waiting for a credit event to act; it is repairing the balance sheet after a much stronger half-year. The broader market backdrop also looks firmer than it was earlier in the year, with the company highlighting improvement into October and November.
The bull case rests on durable earnings power, not just one good quarter
The positive case is simple: EuroDry appears to have both better near-term earnings and better financing flexibility at the same time. The Alpha Bank facility gives the company more room to manage existing debt, while the fleet has already shown it can earn significantly more per day than it did in prior periods.
That does not remove the risk. Dry bulk remains a cyclical business, and second-quarter performance alone does not prove that earnings power is permanently reset. If freight rates soften, the strategic value of the refinancing will still matter, but the upside case will look less compelling.
The real question is whether the Ekaterini deal supports future cash flow
My view is that this is no longer just a liquidity story. The key test is whether the Ekaterini refinancing helps future charters and cash-flow visibility rather than simply pushing a near-term obligation further out. If that happens, EuroDry could look increasingly like a business with improving cash generation. If not, the deal will look more like temporary relief in a volatile market.
