Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a series of ambitious goals for the network's development by 2025, aligning with a significant increase in user engagement within the ecosystem. In a recent post, Buterin highlighted several key areas of focus, including faster transaction finality, the implementation of stateless client architecture, enhanced privacy features, and stronger decentralization across the network.
Buterin's announcement coincides with a record high in active users on the Ethereum network. Data indicates that over 15.4 million unique addresses interacted with Ethereum-based applications in the past week, with nearly 13.45 million of these interactions occurring on Layer-2 solutions. This surge in user engagement underscores the growing importance of Ethereum in the blockchain landscape.
One of Buterin's top priorities is the research and development of single-slot finality. This protocol change aims to reduce the time required to finalize transactions to just 12 seconds, significantly enhancing the network's efficiency and user experience. Additionally, Buterin emphasized the need for stateless clients, which would shift the responsibility of storing Ethereum's full state from network nodes to users. This change is expected to improve scalability and resilience, making the network more robust and capable of handling increased demand.
Privacy remains a central theme in Buterin's vision for Ethereum. Following his earlier publication of a short-term roadmap on Ethereum privacy, he reiterated the importance of developing user-friendly tools that preserve confidentiality without compromising transparency or security. This focus on privacy is crucial for maintaining user trust and ensuring the network's long-term viability.
Buterin's roadmap also includes plans to support decentralized infrastructure, encrypted messaging platforms, improved developer documentation, and new models for open-source funding and governance. These initiatives aim to strengthen the broader Ethereum ecosystem, making it more accessible and sustainable for developers and users alike. Additionally, Buterin expressed interest in building systems to facilitate trusted information exchange, including prediction markets and other emerging tools for collective coordination.
While Buterin will not be directly involved in all areas of Ethereum development, he noted that expanding the gas limit and improving peer-to-peer communication remain important objectives for the wider developer community. His renewed research focus follows recent changes at the Ethereum Foundation, which have given him greater freedom to pursue long-term innovation. Co-executive director Tomasz Stańczak recently noted that Buterin’s involvement often accelerates breakthroughs within the ecosystem, highlighting the significant impact of his contributions.
