Ethereum core developer Barnabé Monnot has proposed a significant change to the network’s block time, suggesting a reduction from 12 seconds to 6 seconds ahead of the Glamsterdam fork scheduled for 2026. This proposal, detailed in Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 7782, aims to enhance the network’s efficiency and user experience by adjusting the timing of various blockchain operations.

Monnot argues that reducing block times will increase Ethereum’s “service price,” which refers to the economic value the blockchain can capture for providing its service as a settlement layer. The proposal outlines several benefits of this reduction, including improved user experience, faster Layer 2 interactions, tighter decentralized exchange (DEX) pricing, reduced miner extractable value (MEV), and quicker finality. Monnot believes that shorter slot times will enhance the confirmation service, potentially raising the service price beyond its current level, absent any supply increase. However, he acknowledges that supply increases are a factor to consider.

This proposal is part of a broader effort towards “healthy scaling” that Monnot anticipates will be achieved by the time the Glamsterdam fork takes place. He expressed his view that a 2x reduction in slot time would be a significant option for Ethereum and should be seriously considered for the upcoming fork. The proposal comes at a time when the Ethereum community is actively debating its merits, with developers and stakeholders weighing the implications of this change on the network’s performance and user experience.

Monnot’s proposal underscores the ongoing efforts to optimize Ethereum’s infrastructure, ensuring it remains competitive and efficient in the rapidly evolving blockchain landscape. As the community continues to discuss and evaluate EIP 7782, the potential for significant improvements in Ethereum’s service price and overall performance remains a key point of interest. The proposal highlights the developer’s commitment to enhancing the network’s capabilities and ensuring it continues to provide the best service at the cheapest sustainable price.
