Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has called for a strategic pivot in the development of Ethereum’s Layer 2 (L2) infrastructure, advocating for a shift from optimistic rollups to zero-knowledge (ZK) proof systems to significantly reduce withdrawal times. Currently, L2 solutions that rely on optimistic rollups require a minimum of seven days to finalize withdrawals on the Ethereum mainnet, a process that allows for the submission of fraud proofs to ensure security. Buterin argues that this delay creates unnecessary friction for users and undermines the efficiency of the Ethereum ecosystem [1].
According to Buterin, transitioning to ZK-based rollups could reduce withdrawal times to under an hour in the short term, with the potential to achieve as low as 12 seconds in the medium term [2]. ZK proofs work by generating cryptographic proofs that verify the correctness of transactions without revealing their content, thereby eliminating the need for extended challenge periods. This shift would not only enhance user experience but also improve the overall liquidity of the Ethereum network by reducing the time users are forced to wait for withdrawals [1].
The Ethereum co-founder further proposed the use of hybrid models that combine ZK proofs with other technologies like Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs), offering a flexible yet secure framework for L2 solutions. Buterin emphasized that the urgency of improving withdrawal times outweighs the immediate pursuit of full decentralization for L2s [1]. This strategic approach aligns with recent advancements in ZK technology, which have made it increasingly feasible to balance speed, security, and scalability without compromising the integrity of the Ethereum network.
The proposed shift is expected to attract greater developer interest in ZK-centric solutions and could lead to a reallocation of Total Value Locked across various L2 platforms, including Arbitrum, Optimism, and zkSync. However, no major regulatory or institutional comments have been made on the technical transition so far [1].
For the broader Ethereum ecosystem, this move represents a pivotal shift in scaling priorities. By prioritizing user experience and operational efficiency, Ethereum aims to maintain its leadership in decentralized asset issuance and economic infrastructure. Buterin sees this as a critical step in solidifying Ethereum’s role as the central economic hub of the blockchain space [2].
