Stripe has partnered with Paradigm, a prominent venture capital firm in the cryptocurrency space, to develop a new layer-one blockchain called Tempo, specifically designed for payments [1]. This initiative, first alluded to in a now-removed job posting, is intended to be a high-speed, payments-focused blockchain that could facilitate global merchant adoption from the outset [2]. The project is being developed in secrecy, reportedly by a team of five, and is not built as an overlay on existing blockchain networks, but rather as a standalone layer-one protocol [3].
Tempo is expected to be compatible with the Solidity programming language, which suggests it will support smart contracts and potentially integrate with a wide range of existing blockchain tools and applications [4]. Stripe’s decision to build its own blockchain reflects its broader strategy to control the infrastructure for crypto transactions, particularly as it continues to expand its presence in the stablecoin and crypto wallet sectors [5]. Earlier in 2024 and 2025, Stripe acquired Bridge and Privy, two companies that significantly enhanced its stablecoin integration and custodial wallet capabilities [6].
Analysts suggest that the Tempo blockchain will give Stripe greater control over the infrastructure that processes transactions, enabling the company to offer more robust and scalable solutions for businesses using cryptocurrencies as a payment method [7]. This aligns with the growing adoption of stablecoins, especially in the U.S., where the passage of the GENIUS Act has established clearer federal standards for the crypto industry [8]. Stripe co-founder Patrick Collison has previously indicated that the increasing maturity of blockchain technology has led more businesses to consider digital assets as viable payment instruments [9].
Despite these developments, Stripe has not yet disclosed whether it will issue its own native token for the Tempo blockchain [10]. The company has also not provided detailed information on the specific problems Tempo aims to solve. However, industry observers believe that the project could strengthen Stripe’s position in the corporate cryptocurrency payments space and potentially compete with major smart contract platforms like
[11]. At this stage, however, no details have been released regarding the governance model or the launch timeline of Tempo [12].Stripe’s collaboration with Paradigm highlights the growing trend among fintech firms to develop proprietary blockchain solutions tailored to their business needs [13]. By leveraging Paradigm’s deep expertise in crypto infrastructure and innovation, Stripe is positioning itself to build a payments-first blockchain that supports its mission of enabling global e-commerce and financial services at scale [14].
