Standard Chartered has expressed a preference for
treasury structures over U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs, citing improved net asset value (NAV) efficiency, staking yields, and institutional adoption [1]. According to Geoffrey Kendrick, head of research at the bank, Ethereum treasury firms now offer a more compelling investment proposition than traditional ETF vehicles, particularly as regulatory clarity improves and DeFi integration increases [2]. The bank's analysts highlight that these treasury structures allow for a more direct exposure to Ethereum’s native incentives, which are becoming increasingly attractive as exchange reserves decline [3].Since June 1, Ethereum treasury companies have absorbed over 1.6% of the total ETH supply, a figure that mirrors the buying activity of spot ETFs [4]. This growing institutional interest in treasury holdings reflects a shift in capital allocation strategies, with investors seeking higher returns through yield generation and more dynamic exposure to the Ethereum network [5]. The bank’s endorsement has been reflected in market price action, with Ethereum rising by nearly 5.5% in 24 hours and treasury-linked equities outperforming ETFs [6].
Standard Chartered also notes that Ethereum treasury firms are outpacing ETFs in shaping the market, particularly as staking yields offer investors an alternative to holding ETH passively [7]. This trend aligns with broader Ethereum price momentum, including a 56% gain since the beginning of the month—the strongest performance since July 2022 [8]. The bank suggests that this momentum is supported by strong inflows into both ETFs and treasuries, though the latter is gaining more traction among institutional investors [9].
The firm’s analysis emphasizes the growing appeal of Ethereum treasury firms as a distinct investment vehicle. These entities, which manage large ETH holdings, are increasingly viewed as a key driver of price movement and market resilience. Standard Chartered sees a potential structural shift in how investors access and utilize Ethereum, moving toward yield-focused alternatives that offer more than just price appreciation [10]. This view is echoed by other market participants who see Ethereum treasury structures as a more viable and scalable option for long-term exposure to the asset [11].
Standard Chartered’s stance reinforces a broader industry trend, where institutional capital is favoring alternative investment frameworks that align more closely with Ethereum’s native economic model [12]. As the market continues to evolve, the distinction between traditional ETFs and treasury vehicles is becoming more pronounced, with the latter offering unique advantages in terms of yield generation, DeFi integration, and regulatory adaptability [13].
