eToro has launched tokenized U.S. stock trading on the Ethereum blockchain, marking a strategic shift toward integrating real-world assets (RWA) with decentralized finance (DeFi). The platform will tokenize 100 of the most popular U.S.-listed stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), enabling users to trade these assets 24/5. This move allows investors to respond to market events in real-time, regardless of traditional market hours [1].
The tokenized assets will be issued as ERC-20 tokens, facilitating seamless transfers between
wallets and external DeFi protocols or self-custody wallets. CEO Yoni Assia emphasized the long-term vision of tokenizing all assets on the platform, starting with stocks, to integrate them into the broader DeFi ecosystem. He cited regulatory developments such as the EU’s MiCA framework and the U.S. GENIUS Act as key enablers of this transition, providing a legal and regulated environment for tokenized assets [2].This initiative follows similar moves by rival platforms. Robinhood recently launched tokenized versions of over 200 U.S. stocks for European investors, leveraging its own layer-2 blockchain built on Arbitrum [1]. Meanwhile, Ethereum remains a dominant player in the RWA tokenization space, with 55% of the $21.4 billion in total on-chain RWA value currently hosted on the network. Analysts suggest that major
entering the space could further accelerate adoption [2].eToro’s foray into tokenized stocks is not its first foray into RWA. The platform previously launched tokenized gold and silver in 2019. The company now aims to use blockchain to remove traditional financial barriers and democratize access to assets. According to Assia, tokenization offers greater transparency, control, and the potential to make assets more widely available to a global audience [3].
Despite the momentum, tokenized stocks remain a small segment of the overall RWA market. On-chain stocks currently represent about $418 million in total value, compared to over $21.3 billion in the broader RWA market [1]. However, some industry experts predict the tokenized stocks sector could grow into a trillion-dollar market in the future [1].
The availability of these tokenized stocks is currently limited to jurisdictions outside the U.S., and their adoption will depend heavily on regulatory clarity and market demand. As the infrastructure and regulatory landscape matures, eToro’s move could pave the way for broader innovation in asset tokenization, further blurring the lines between traditional finance and blockchain-based systems.
