Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed structural changes to reduce block times and improve finality speed, aiming for a 10x scalability boost by 2026. The key proposal includes EIP-7782, which would cut the block time from 12 seconds to 6 seconds, effectively doubling the frequency of new blocks. This adjustment is expected to increase network throughput and transaction confirmation speed, enhancing user experience especially during periods of high demand[1].
In parallel, Buterin introduced a two-tier system to decouple block finality and fork choice mechanisms. This approach seeks to boost Ethereum’s scalability while maintaining the network’s security and decentralization. The changes are part of a broader vision to make Ethereum more efficient and adaptable to future technological challenges[2].
The proposal aligns with a long-term strategy aimed at reaching 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) and enhancing quantum resistance. This "Lean Plan" involves simplifying the network’s technical stack and integrating quantum-resistant technologies such as zkVMs and RISC-V architecture. The RISC-V transition, previously proposed for 2025, is expected to increase speed and resilience in the network[3].
Analysts have responded positively to Buterin’s proposals, viewing them as a step toward strengthening Ethereum’s position in the competitive blockchain landscape. Improved speed, scalability, and security could help Ethereum maintain its leadership in decentralized applications and smart contract development. However, successful implementation will depend on coordination among developers, validators, and the broader community to ensure a secure and smooth transition[4].
Looking ahead, the focus for Ethereum is shifting toward usability and infrastructure rather than speculative value. Innovations such as gasless transactions, contract-based wallets, and AI-enhanced interfaces are being explored to make the platform more accessible to everyday users. For Ethereum to realize its original vision of programmable finance, it must not only remain a valuable asset but also serve as a practical tool for digital economies[5].
