Ethereum is preparing for two major network upgrades in 2026 that will significantly enhance its transaction processing speed and network resilience. The upgrades, known as the Glamsterdam and Heze-Bogota forks, are expected to introduce parallel transaction processing and expand gas limits. These changes aim to scale the
network and reduce congestion during peak usage periods. The Glamsterdam fork, set for mid-2026, will bring parallel transaction processing capabilities by implementing EIP-7928. This will allow multiple transactions to be executed simultaneously rather than sequentially, dramatically boosting throughput. Additionally, gas limits are expected to increase from 60 million to 200 million, potentially enabling the network to handle up to 10,000 transactions per second.
The Heze-Bogota fork, scheduled for later in the year, will focus on enhancing privacy and censorship resistance. By implementing Fork-Choice Inclusion Lists, the network will become more robust against attempts to block transactions. This will ensure that as long as a portion of the network remains honest, transactions will continue to be processed without interference
.The Glamsterdam fork will mark a significant shift in how Ethereum validators operate. Instead of re-executing every transaction, they will transition to validating zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs. This change will reduce the computational workload for validators while maintaining network security.
, approximately 10% of validators are expected to adopt ZK proof verification after the upgrade.Gabriel Trintinalia, a senior blockchain engineer at Consensys, explained that the Block Access Lists feature will allow Ethereum to pre-load necessary data into memory. This eliminates the bottleneck caused by reading data from disk during transaction processing. The upgrade also introduces Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation, which decouples block validation from execution. This
and reduces centralization risks.
The increased gas limits will also benefit layer 2 scaling solutions. With more data blobs per block—potentially reaching 72—layer 2 networks will be able to process hundreds of thousands of transactions per second. This will significantly reduce costs for end users and improve the overall user experience on the Ethereum network
.The Heze-Bogota fork will address privacy and censorship resistance by implementing Fork-Choice Inclusion Lists. This mechanism empowers multiple validators to mandate specific transaction inclusions in each block. By doing so, it ensures that even if some validators attempt to censor transactions, others will ensure their inclusion as long as part of the network remains honest
.Ethereum developers view these upgrades as critical to maintaining the network's openness and neutrality as global adoption grows. The ability to resist censorship will reinforce Ethereum's position as a decentralized, permissionless platform. Additionally, the planned Ethereum Interoperability Layer will facilitate seamless cross-chain operations among layer 2 solutions, completing the year's upgrade cycle
.Recent on-chain data shows growing Ethereum network activity. Active addresses nearly doubled in a week, rising from around 496,000 to 800,000. This increase in user participation indicates growing interest in the Ethereum ecosystem. Additionally, more ETH has moved onto exchanges, with reserves rising from about 16.2 million to nearly 16.6 million ETH
.The ETH price has stabilized after dipping toward $2,850 but remains in a corrective phase. Traders believe that if market conditions improve, ETH could attempt a recovery toward the $3,390 zone. The combination of higher speed, ZK-based validation, and stronger decentralization is expected to position Ethereum for long-term growth
.Ethereum's 2026 upgrades represent a transformative shift in the blockchain's architecture. With parallel processing, increased gas limits, and ZK-based validation, the network is poised to handle significantly more transactions while maintaining security and decentralization. The Heze-Bogota fork will further enhance privacy and censorship resistance, ensuring that Ethereum remains a robust and open platform. These upgrades will not only benefit Ethereum's layer 1 but also improve the scalability and efficiency of layer 2 networks, supporting broader adoption and use cases across the ecosystem.
